Something not working?

Most of it is one setting. Try these first — they fix the great majority of it, and faster than we can answer.

Troubleshooting

The other person cannot hear me

Almost always the microphone permission. Look for the padlock or camera icon beside the web address and check the microphone is allowed for this site. Then reload the page and start the call again.

If you are on a laptop with more than one input, use the device button during a call to pick the right microphone. Browsers frequently choose a monitor's built-in mic that nobody has ever spoken into.

I cannot hear them, on a phone

Check the media volume, not the ringer volume. On Android these are separate and the media one is often at zero. On iPhone, check the physical silent switch as well.

Tapping anywhere on the call screen also helps: browsers block audio until you interact with the page, and a call that connects before you have touched anything can start muted.

Video is black, or the call will not connect

Usually the network rather than the camera. Mobile networks and office or hotel wifi often prevent two browsers connecting directly, and the call needs a relay to get through.

Try wifi instead of mobile data, or the other way round. If it works on one and not the other, that is the cause and it is on our side to fix — tell us which network failed and we will look.

I am not getting notified about calls

Turn them on at notifications, once per browser. It does not carry across from your laptop to your phone.

On iPhone and iPad a website can only send notifications if it has been added to the Home Screen first. Open Say Up in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, and turn notifications on from there. That is Apple's rule and there is nothing we can do about it from here.

If you said no to the permission once, the browser will not ask again. Change it beside the address bar.

Somebody cannot call me

Check who can call you. The default is contacts only, so somebody who is not in your contacts cannot ring — they have to message you first, or you add them.

Billing, plans and allowances

Your usage this period is on your plan. Minutes count when a call ends, so a call in progress will not show yet.

Running out does not lock you out. If a renewal cannot be paid, the account drops to Free and keeps everything except the paid features.

In an emergency

Say Up cannot call emergency services. It does not reach the telephone network. Use a phone that does — this is true on every plan, including the paid ones.
